The landscape is quiet on a windy January morning at Weir Baptist Camp in Southeast Kansas with the summer camping season still months away.
But activity will soon pick up as construction begins on a new cabin. Most of the camp’s buildings sit on a hilltop. The hill is shifting, causing cabin walls to crack. And most of the cabins are almost as old as the 50-year-old camp. So plans call for building new cabins on the plain below the hill.
If the weather cooperates, construction will begin on the new cabin in February. The 40-by-60-foot building will house 32 people, 16 on each side. It will have a small kitchenette to allow groups to prepare simple meals.
The goal is to have the new building far enough along for spring-break groups to work on it in March, says Delbert Callaway, camp manager.
This will be the first of six new cabins. “Right now we’re working on the plan of building three [cabins] in three years.” Callaway hopes construction on the second new cabin can start this fall.
The new buildings will help Weir Baptist Camp fulfill its mission of introducing children and adults to Jesus Christ. During the 2008 camps, 23 campers accepted Christ. Camp dates for 2009 are:
