Sunday Morning Live: a collection of drama sketches - Vol. 1 (VHS)

Steve Pederson

The 6 dramas on each video, presented at Willow Creek Community Church, were especially written to reach the unchurched, raise questions, and make the audience laugh—or cry.  They act as a “set-up” to the message given by the pastor, opening the audience to hear God’s Word on issues like evangelism, addiction, and marital conflict.

An Hour On Wednesday
6 min.
Christ and Laura are a couple living in the fast track. Their highly scheduled existence leaves them little time for each other. When Laura reveals she is pregnant, Christ’ machine-like response is “February is a bad month.” Laura ends up hurt by his insensitivity. While much of the sketch is comical, it moves toward a very poignant ending.
MARRIAGE
Feeling Opposition
7 min.
Kate’s emotions are expressed when Phil wanted her to sign their will. Kate signs, the lawyer gives Phil an envelop and Phil’s looses control of his emotions because he felt he shouldn’t be given a bill when he had done work for the lawyer. The enclosed tickets rather than a bill is the reason for his emotional change.
EMOTIONS
Tired When Needed
9 min.
Mr. Watson has locked himself up in a motel room to get away from people and their demands on his time. However, Mrs. Willoughby has tracked him down to request his involvement in just One more worthy cause. He tries reason, but even a direct “no” doesn’t work with Mrs. Willoughby – until he cracks!
BURN OUT (PSYCHOLOGY) \ STRESS (PSYCHOLOGY)
I Don’t Want to Fight You Anymore
5 min.
The monologue eavesdrops on a conversation between a woman and God. She describes her frustration at obeying God in an effort to be the new creation He desires. He demands a lot. She reminds God that she lacked a loving father role model in her earthly father. She felt controlled by her father, and now isn’t sure she’s willing to let God control her life. But she’s tired of fighting, and needs to make a decision.
SELF-CONTROL \ OBEDIENCE
Wonderfully Made
7 min.
A creative interpretation of Psalm 139’s statement of how God knits us together in our mother’s womb and has a plan for our life. We see a child, Elizabeth, assigned qualities by God while in her mother’s womb. She is to be a dancer, a left-handed painter, and introvert, and strong-willed. She knows she is loved and made just right. However, once she is born, these feelings change because her parents’ aspirations for her are quite different than what she was “told” in the womb. Her father replaces ballet shoes with soccer shoes. Her mother makes her keep her left hand behind her back so that her penmanship doesn’t look funny. Their “redirection” through the years physically and emotionally stifles who Elizabeth was meant to be, and she grows up a very sad and confused child.
