Kansas Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists (KNCSB)

Helping Churches Make Disciples of All People

Bowies take short-term assignment in Peru

Kansas missionaries Ken and Linda Bowie serve in northern Chile. However, they have taken a six-month assignment in Peru, where they served for nearly 25 years. They sent this e-mail update:

“Many years ago when we were in journeyman training we heard that it was necessary for missionaries to be flexible. How that lesson has served us through the years! Now we are getting ready for a short-term assignment to Ica, Peru, due to an agreement between the United States and Chile governments about retirement benefits. Every five years, we must be outside of Chile for at least six consecutive months. We will be in Peru until June 1, 2009.

“Ica is where there was a major earthquake in August 2007. Baptists sent many volunteers to aid the victims in the last year and now there is a need to help disciple the new believers and help establish new churches. We will be working with Daniel and Betty Terrones, Peruvian home missionaries, whom we have known since 1974 when they were seminary students in Trujillo. Although we will have to leave mission work in the Limari valley of Chile in the hands of Chileans, we are excited about the opportunity to serve in Peru again.”

The Bowies ask Kansas-Nebraska Southern Baptists to pray for:

  • “Our health to hold up in all the traveling, packing, and moving. Ken still suffers back pain after his major back surgery in 2006 and other unrelated herniated discs in the lower back. Linda is walking with a cane after her second knee replacement on Sept. 30.

  • “First Baptist Church, Ovalle, as they seek a new pastor. Pastor Carlos Malve is retiring and moving back to Argentina in March.

  • “Chilean Baptists to continue to travel to towns in the valley to teach the Bible to children and adults (even with the pastor and missionaries gone.)

  • “The other missionary families in northern Chile. Only one family is on the field. The others are either on stateside assignment in the United States or on their six-month assignment outside Chile.”
