Church dedicates new building
After nearly 18 years of effort, New Life Baptist Church, Independence, Kan., dedicated its new building on Sunday, Oct. 30.
The local skating rink was donated to the church in the late 1990s. More than 70 volunteers dismantled the building in February 1999. The volunteers contributed 1,273 of labor in 24 days.
Since then many volunteers worked hard to make the church’s new building a reality. Among those groups was Kansas-Nebraska Campers on Mission. COM members often worked at Weir Baptist Camp, 12 miles southwest of Pittsburg, Kan., before or after serving at the Independence church.
The new building features a sanctuary that will seat 220 people and a baptistry with shower rooms, a multi-purpose gym, a spacious kitchen with a pantry, restrooms and classrooms.
Plans call for razing the church’s original building which sits in front of the new building. The upstairs area in the new building still needs to be completed when funds are available. Volunteers will be needed for this project.
The church has a great vision for ministry using the new building. Among the plans are to bring back the Clothes Closet to provide free clothing for local residents.
