Silver Lake, Kan., pastor’s wife Jo Smith dies

Josephene Lee “Jo” Smith, 60, passed away peacefully in her home Saturday, April 22, after a seven-year bout with ovarian cancer. She was pastor’s wife at Lakeside Baptist Church, Silver Lake, Kan.

She was born April 28, 1956, in Woodstock, Ill., the daughter of Larry and Wilma Rall Tiefenthaler.

On June 22, 1973, Jo and Randy Eugene Smith were united in marriage, enjoying more than 43 years together. They were charter members of Lakeside Baptist Church in Silver Lake.

Jo loved to work with children both in Sunday School and in the USD 372 special education department.

Grateful to have shared her life are her husband, Randy Smith; children, Trisha Backman, Lance Smith and Caleb Smith, all of Silver Lake; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her mother, Wilma Tiefenthaler; siblings, Peggy Peterson, Linda Wang, Mick Tiefenthaler, Laura Blotske, Bill Tiefenthaler, Dan Tiefenthaler and Angie Rothe; and many nieces and nephews. Jo was preceded in death by her father.

Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at First Southern Baptist Church, 1912 SW Gage Blvd., Topeka KS 66604. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery.
